Role at FSG
Irfan focuses on helping build and scale market-based solutions to development challenges across a range of sectors. He has been involved in designing and adapting business models that serve low-income customers, leading customer research efforts in both rural and urban settings, and critically assessing socially impactful industries to help identify the barriers to scale for market-based solutions. Most recently, Irfan has been working on helping catalyze the private provision of affordable high-quality early childhood education for children from low-income households in urban India.
Prior to joining FSG, Irfan was part of the Monitor Inclusive Markets team at Monitor Deloitte where he worked on a variety of projects that sought to help develop and scale inclusive businesses. These include identifying barriers to scale for India’s fledgling rural business process outsourcing industry, developing a viable business model that could help address the rural sanitation challenge, and exploring market-based solutions for the provision of primary healthcare. During his time at Monitor Deloitte, Irfan worked with a number of partners including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Program, and NASSCOM.
Irfan has previously worked at the United Nations Development Program, supporting its programs on both governance and trade. He was also involved in efforts to support democracy and human rights in his native Maldives during its transition to democracy. He worked with the local chapter of Transparency International in helping organize and conduct the country’s first ever domestic election observation mission. Irfan later served as Executive Director of the Maldivian Democracy Network, launching a number of new initiatives in the country on parliamentary accountability, gender equality, and monitoring political violence.
