Charter school enrollment is on the rise in many urban areas. Fifty-six percent of all public charter schools are located in urban areas, and 10 of our nation’s largest school districts now have 20,000 students enrolled in public charter schools. To improve education for all children throughout the nation’s cities, charter schools must work collectively with each other and local stakeholders.

Top Takeaways

  1. A citywide charter strategy should increase collaboration and best practice sharing, ensure the provision of resource intensive-support, and promote greater district/charter collaboration.
  2. The first steps to a citywide charter strategy are to conduct a situation assessment, identify goals and supporting activities, and define the organizing structure.
  3. To improve district-charter alignment, shift mindset and messaging from “us vs. them” to “we want all of our children to succeed.”
Citywide charter strategies can offer benefits to individual charter schools and create citywide movements that help all charter schools be more effective and efficient, and deliver a higher quality education.
